Rostock, October 12th, 2021 - The Rostock-based InsurTech hepster is expanding its pet insurance to include its own dog protection. The new surgical insurance offers four freely selectable tariffs from which dog owners can book the right protection for their four-legged friend. Dog health insurance will also follow soon. In June 2021, hepster entered the animal insurance market with surgery and health insurance for cats.

For the love of animals - pet insurance protects against high veterinary costs

There are currently more than 35 million animals in German households, including over 10.7 million dogs. More and more veterinarians in Germany, Austria and Switzerland recommend taking out animal health or surgical insurance for pets. While dog owner liability insurance is required by law in some federal states, only just under 20 percent of dog owners insure their four-legged friends. Dogs in particular show that many animals often have to struggle with health problems in their first year of life, regardless of their breed. These health problems sometimes lead to very expensive surgeries and follow-up treatments.

Yet many pet owners are in for a nasty surprise when they receive vet bills as a result of an unexpected accident or surgery. Pet insurance can help with these costs and also ensure better treatment for the beloved pet. "Of course, everyone who loves their pet wants to ensure adequate basic security and health or surgical insurance makes this possible at a very reasonable price - compared to the actual costs," says Alexander Hornung, insurance expert and CPO of InsurTech hepster. “Unexpected operations in particular can pose a financial risk. Therefore, dog owners in particular should at least consider surgical insurance.”

Growth for hepster animal insurance: Own dog surgery insurance

The Rostock InsurTech hepster entered the animal insurance market in the summer of this year and launched two new insurance policies specifically for cat owners. For example, hepster offers comprehensive cat health insurance and inexpensive cat surgery insurance, each with flexible tariff and term options.

Now hepster is expanding its pet insurance portfolio and launching its own dog surgery insurance. For the first time, hepster is giving its customers four tariffs to choose from: “The new tariff structure of our dog surgery insurance is even more individually tailored to the needs of pet owners. This is how we want to take the topic of flexibility for insurance companies to the next level," says Alexander Hornung, explaining the new insurance. The hepster surgical protection for dogs covers the costs of operations and necessary treatments, including necessary diagnostics and medicines. Depending on the tariff, postoperative treatments such as physiotherapy or homeopathy are also included. For a puppy and young dog up to one year old, the canine surgery insurance is available at a low basic rate from €9.65 per month.

The new hepster dog surgery insurance covers dogs of various breeds up to the age of 6 years. The insurance protection also remains in place beyond the maximum entry age, so that dogs aged 8 or 10 years are also insured through hepster, provided the insurance was taken out before the end of the 7th year of life. The advantage: the insurance premium remains stable as the dog gets older. The decisive factor here is the entry age when the insurance is taken out. Anyone who insures their Border Collie puppy at the age of 12 weeks with the hepster OP insurance benefits from a constant, calculable and low-cost premium for the entire insurance period.

As with cat insurance, the insurance for dog surgery insurance is taken out without a comprehensive health check. Only a few general health questions need to be answered. Excluded are, among other things, diseases known to the dog owner, congenital, genetic or acquired malformations and diseases that resulted in an operation in the last 6 months before the conclusion of the contract. “Our insurance offers the clear advantage that the dog can be insured without any problems, despite an existing previous illness. Only the respective previous illness and associated treatments are excluded from the service," Alexander Hornung explains the scope of services.
